A Deaf-led community organisation at the heart of Leicester since 1897
Our Story
Leicester Deaf Centre has been at the heart of Leicester’s Deaf community for over a century. Founded in 1897 as the Church of the Good Shepherd, we have grown into a vibrant, Deaf-led organisation offering community, welfare and support services to Deaf people across Leicestershire.
In January 2026, we moved to our exciting new home — The Lighthouse at 45 Upper Tichborne Street, Leicester LE2 1GL — beginning a new chapter for our community. The move was a remarkable team effort: three full van loads, a whole community coming together, and a new space ready to welcome Deaf people for years to come.
We are proud to be Deaf-led, community-focused, and here for the long term.
What We Do
Community Groups
Open House, Wednesday Deaf Club, Deaf Together and more — spaces to connect, socialise and belong.
Letter Translation & Support
We help Deaf people understand and respond to written correspondence, including letters, emails and forms.
Welfare & Advocacy
Supporting Deaf people to navigate services, access benefits and have their voices heard.
Our History
Our roots go back to 1897 when the Church of the Good Shepherd was founded, providing fellowship and support for Leicester’s Deaf community. Over the decades we grew, eventually settling at 12 Frog Island — a much-loved home for generations of Deaf people in Leicester.
In 2025–26, after a successful move, we secured The Lighthouse on Upper Tichborne Street. The Frog Island building has since been demolished, marking the end of one chapter and the confident start of another.
Today, Leicester Deaf Centre — trading as LDAG (Leicester Deaf Action Group CIO) — continues to be a Deaf-led organisation, run by and for the Deaf community of Leicester and Leicestershire.
